Think Piece: On The Story Behind BoringMarketing.com

We launched in April and will do millions in revenue next year.

I’m not a fan of revenue screenshots and MRR numbers, so I’ll keep it at that.

I’ve started and operated other successful businesses…

But, none have grown as quickly and have as much potential as Boringmarketing .com

Why?

  • Baked in distribution - A huge advantage was baked-in distribution through founder partnerships. Specifically, aligning with Greg Isenberg provided instant exposure to a large, targeted audience from day one.
  • Relationships - I have spent over a decade nurturing connections in the marketing space. When the timing was right, I leveraged these relationships to secure referrals, partnerships, and other opportunities.
  • Outstanding team - I realized very soon that I needed to bring on people smarter than me in key areas like SEO, operations, and more. This allowed me to focus on the big picture while delegating specialized work to top-notch team members.
  • Unique brand - While a perfect brand isn't mandatory, differentiation is essential. Their positioning as "boring marketers" immediately stood out from competitors.
  • Creator-first marketing - I approach marketing like a creator. I share narratives, perspectives, and stories in an authentic way that builds connections.
  • Founder-led sales - I know the importance of leading sales in the early days to learn the market, Ideal Customer Profile, common objections, and what resonates. This first-hand experience provides invaluable insight to refine positioning and offerings.
  • Relentlessly data-driven - I take a data-driven approach to everything from social media to analyzing their sales funnel. I obsessively track, measure, and analyze data to derive insights and drive decisions.
  • Sequence of strong offers - In the past, I have struggled to get my foot in the door with new prospects. This time, I implemented a strong sequence starting with their audit sprint, delivering value upfront. This builds trust and credibility, qualifying leads for higher-priced ongoing services.
  • An eye for market trends - The team stays on top of emerging trends like AI and leveraged them at the right time.
  • Internal R&D / proprietary tech - This allows us to deliver better results and explore new business models beyond just services. Ongoing innovation also helps us stay ahead of the pack.
  • Customer love and success - The team goes above and beyond to build genuine relationships, deliver unexpected value, and ensure customers find success. Small touches and truly caring about each customer has been central to their high retention and referral rates.

What will take us to the next level?

  • Conversion rate optimization
  • Funnels, funnels, funnels
  • Predictable revenue
  • Doubling down on inbound marketing
  • Founder managed sales
  • Commercializing our tech
  • Adding ancillary services
  • Hiring myself out of roles
  • Building company culture
  • Adding DIY and Done With You offers
  • Focus on core services
  • Key industry partnerships
  • Customer love and success
  • Sales focused org

Sometimes it feels like overnight, but I remind myself it’s an (early) success 10+ years in the making!

  1. My co-founder Greg Isenberg and I met over a decade ago
  2. I’ve been working with high-growth companies deep behind the scenes
  3. Greg’s been growing his community for a longgg time
  4. Recruited 10x team members
  5. Started other companies and failed (apps, SaaS)
  6. Started other agencies and learned (doing the opposite of many past decisions now!)
  7. Developed a high amount of self-awareness as a CEO

Excited about the future! And, thanks for following along so far.

Q: Which SEO plugin do you prefer for WordPress?

A: I think RankMath is the BEST WordPress SEO plugin out there.

And nothing like their paid versions—RankMath Pro.

There are a gazillion features in RankMath but here are a few features I absolutely LOVE:

1/ Rank tracker - You get to know the rankings for 100s of keywords (even the ones you are not actively tracking)

2/ Schema generator - It supports 840+ schema types and also has the option to add your custom schema.

3/ Advanced redirection manager - So easy to use and most importantly, you can automate redirections.

4/ robots.txt Editor - Back in the day, I used to hate the fact that I had to upload the robots.txt manually every time I updated it. It’s so simple to do it with RankMath.

5/ Advanced image SEO - Helps you save a ton of time and add missing alt tags for images. Especially useful if you have a large site with a lot of images.

6/ Local SEO & knowledge graph - This is a feature I didn’t know I needed until I used it. So easy to add important information related to local SEO and knowledge graphs.

Apart from this I absolutely love how clean and nice the interface is.
